We went through the entire book for Math 130: Groups and Geometries, which I took in Spring 2024.
Pros
- Comes with a lot of examples - matroids were a bit hard to visualize and understand at first, so having a lot of examples, especially at the beginning, made it very helpful.
- Having definitions and such on the side of the page was pretty helpful when trying to look for something - it made it easier to look for whatever I was finding.
Cons
- The footnotes. In my thoughts on Real Analysis: A Long-Form Mathematics Textbook, I said the following: “I enjoyed the attempts at humor and goals to make this more light-hearted. It’s nice to step away from a textbook that is stiff in nature for a more refreshing narration, and I have respect for any author that is brave enough to do so”, and I would like to formally retract this statement because this textbook just bothers me to the core with its attempts to be funny. I appreciate the effort, but the footnotes do not come off as light-hearted but rather silly and snarky, like if they came off something like Twitter or Tumblr. In fact, the entire point of this post was just to display my sheer disdain for these footnotes - they just rub me the wrong way.
